The Zamfara State Wind Energy Desktop Study, developed by the Nigeria Wind Energy Council (NWEC), presents a preliminary assessment of the state’s wind energy potential using secondary data from the Global Wind Atlas (https://globalwindatlas.info/), a globally recognised wind resource mapping platform developed by the World Bank Group in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The study analyses publicly available wind resource data to identify areas with promising potential for utility-scale wind energy development in Zamfara State.
As a desktop study, the findings are intended to provide an initial screening of opportunities and should not be regarded as a substitute for detailed, site-specific wind resource assessment. Before any wind energy project advances to the feasibility, financing, or investment stages, it is essential to undertake primary wind resource measurements through the deployment of a meteorological mast (met mast), LiDAR systems, or other industry-standard wind measurement equipment to collect high-quality on-site wind data over a minimum period of 12 months. Such measurement campaigns are critical for validating the desktop assessment, accurately estimating energy yield, reducing project and investment risk, and supporting the technical and financial bankability of future wind energy projects.
This study serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, investors, development partners, researchers, and other stakeholders seeking to better understand Zamfara State’s wind energy potential and to identify opportunities to advance utility-scale wind energy development as part of Nigeria’s broader renewable energy transition.
