Feasibility Study for Wind Project
According to a recent study by IRENA, wind potential in Nigeria is considered moderate, with wind speeds at a height of 100 meters (the average height of a wind turbine) ranging from 2.1 m/s to 8 m/s.
Wind speeds are generally higher in the northern regions, reaching above 6.0 m/s, particularly between April and August, while the southern states experience relatively lower speeds averaging around 3 m/s.
Further estimates by IRENA indicate that Nigeria’s technical wind potential is approximately 3.2 GW, assuming only 1% of suitable land is utilized for wind project development.

Potential Locations with High Wind Speed
Using data from the Global Wind Atlas, 36 states and the FCT have been identified as having high mean wind speeds suitable for wind energy development.
For this analysis, the locations will be grouped by geopolitical zones, with each state within these zones analyzed individually to assess its specific wind potential and development opportunities.
