Feasibility Study for
Wind Project
According to a recent study by IRENA Wind potential in Nigeria is moderate with wind speeds at height of 100m (adopted 100m because average height of a wind turbine is 80-100m) ranging from 2.1 m/s to 8 m/s. Wind speeds are higher in the northern part of Nigeria with values above of 6.0 m/s, especially between April and August while wind speed in the southern states is relatively low with values of 3 m/s. Further estimates by IRENA show that the technical potential for wind is 3.2GW considering only 1% of suitable land can be used for wind project developments.
Potential Locations with
High Wind Speed
Using the Global wind Atlas, the following 36 states and FCT has been identified with high mean wind speed. In the analysis, these locations will be grouped by geopolitical zones. Each state in the geopolitical zones will be analyzed separately.
